6 Weight Loss Tips for Your Overweight Canine

According to the ’09 analysis released by the Organization for Dog Weight problems, thirty four million canines can be identified as being obese. Unfortunately, those shocking figures continue to escalate. The same as with people, being overweight is the most significant overall health risk for dogs and cats in the Unites States. Dogs that have excessive bodyweight will most likely have a reduced metabolic rate and increased appetite. This extra weight often exascerbates other problems, like heart disease and arthritis.

Overweight dogs are also at higher risk for complications during surgery. Not only do they have a hard time undergoing anesthesia, but the extra fat on their bodies makes it much more difficult for surgeons to operate. Over 40% of dogs in the United States are carrying extra fat on their bodies, so it’s a good idea to make sure your dog isn’t on of them.

Here are six strategies you may want to follow to help your dog lose weight for the long term…

1. Research whether or not your dog’s breed is prone to obesity.

Obesity is primarily caused by a combination of inactivity and eating too much food or the wrong foods. However, it’s important to dig deeper and explore some other causes. Certain breeds of dogs are more prone to obesity, and if your dog is one of these breeds, you’ll need to pay special attention to your dog’s weight. English Bulldogs, Beagles, Dachshunds, Pugs, Dalmatians and Cocker Spaniels are the most common breeds that are prone to obesity, but your breed may also be, so be sure to do your own research.

It may be difficult to face the fact that your dog could be overweight or even obese, but it’s so important to your dog’s health for you to pay attention to his or her body composition.

You can’t go by weight alone when determining if your your dog is overweight. You have to look at the taper of the stomach and feel around the ribs. A drooping stomach means your dog is most likely carrying some extra fat, and a thick layer of fat covering the ribcage is another indicator. For a thorough evaluation, however, it’s always a good idea to take your dog to the vet and get a professional opinion.

2. Start by changing your habits and it will be easier to help your dog lose weight

If your dog has a weight problem, he or she is going to need to be more active, which means going for more walks, running around, and playing fetch. Honestly, these changes are going to be very difficult if you lead a sedentary life. If you are not as active as you would like to be, helping your dog get more exercize by playing with him is a great way to bond and have fun with your beloved pet.

Pay attention to everything your dog eats, especially treats. Of course, you never want to starve your dog, but choose a healthy brand of food and treats. An excellent brand of low calorie treats to feed your dog is Life’s Abundance’s Wholesome Hearts.

3. Feed your dog smaller meals but more often

Always measure your dog’s food so that you can keep track of exactly now much he or she is eating. Then divide the amount into small meals, and feed him 4 or 5 times throughout the day. Eating this often will help keep his metabolism up so he will continue to burn fat.

Also keep tabs on the number of treats you feed him each day. Every time you dog begs for a treat, he probably just wants attention, so try playing with him instead.

4. Regularly Record your dog’s food intake and weight

An effective way of seeing the big picture when it comes to your dog’s weight problem is writing down exactly how much he or she eats every day and how much he or she weighs. After a week or two, you’ll be able to go back and see the progress your dog has made as well as make the determination to feed him less if necessary.

5. As a last resort, consider medication

Whenever possible it’s best to help your dog naturally lose weight, but in cases where your dog’s health is severely at risk, your vet may recommend Slentrol, a weight loss pill that was recently approved by the FDA for dogs.

6. Consider a few nutritional supplements

Resveratrol, Leptin, and Quercetin are all shown to aid weight loss in several different ways. Resveratrol has been show to help stabilize blood sugar, which is especially helpful for diabetic dogs. Leptin is sometimes referred to as the appetite hormone because it helps control appetite when added to food. Quercetin reduces inflammation in obese animals. These supplements can be helpful to your dog, bu always consult your veterinarian before giving your dog any of these because the dosages can vary greatly from breed to breed.

It takes a little bit more work and commitment to help your dog lose weight, but it will help your beloved canine maximize their chances for a longer, healthier and happier lifetime.

  9. prometheustherebel: I would have said exactly the same thing if a married man was practising straight sex with other partners – and also asked 'what about his wife'? AIDS is also a risk factor with straight sex too – even if it is “protected” – but of course the risk is increased in gay sex – but that health risk is the lesser of my concerns in this case. You have jumped to the wrong conclusions based on your OWN biases, not mine!

Wow…im really late here…but they actually started breeding them (mini english bulldogs) in the 80s. It was to improve the health of the animal, since many have breathing problems and trouble birthing children. By making them an average of 10 pounds smaller in size, they virtually eliminated the breathing problems, made birthing naturally somewhat possible, and extended the life expectancy of the breed by an average of 4 years. Maybe you should do more research of why they did it before you complain about it…especially since you love the breed.

This is so interesting! It completely makes sense though that as someone is keeping secretes they are at a higher health risk. Keeping things to yourself tends to keep one's stress level higher- and therefore would make sense that they are at a higher health risk. It's funny to think about how sometimes people are bashed for being “too honest” when in reality this is something that is probably very helpful for them! Great blog!

Sometimes folk assert a breed is bigger than it really is. I often see descriptions asserting weights of 80 pounds or so for Belgians, but almost all of them are not that big unless they are overweight. Most of the correctly built dogs I see are in the 40 – 50 pound range. But they LOOK bigger. I've even had vets misguess the weight of my own dogs, perhaps mislead by the height (Belgians being square as opposed to rectangular), or hair, or overweight dogs.

One wonders how much the oversize of some breeds in the ring is driven by people who “assume” a size that isn't really historically correct based on either mistaken estimates or some early breeder exaggerating the size (up or down) of the dog in question. I know most folk can't estimate the size/weight of my sheep if they are “city” folk.

I disagree with most of the posters here. Our society has become so overweight, we have deluded ourselves into thinking that being overweight equates to being “curvy”. You've been describing yourselves as “curvy” in an attempt to make yourselves feel better about the fact that you cannot lose that weight. It isn't fooling anyone, fat is still fat.

I do agree with Heidi's assessment that she is curvy. She's got boobs, butt, and a thin waist–what's there to complain about?

No! Swine flu is a public health issue. Being overweight, or obese, or morbidly obese are all private health issues. No amount of me being fat is dangerous to other people. Whether or not my health is impacted by my fatness, it still remains my health, and cannot do any damage to the public at large. Tell your friend that fatness is not a communicable disease.

Fascinating discussion. And a very important one too. I am not familiar with many of these breeds. But I grew up around English Cocker Spaniels. And they were all around wonderful dogs. So I was surprised to find out how different the American Cockers are. I got part of an answer to that question from the comment above.

Popularity of a specific breed, or a specific 'look' is always a bad thing for the breed and/or the individual dogs involved, it seems.

The Nintendo 3DS has certified its first million seller with Nintendogs + Cats, which has sold approximately 1.71 million units worldwide. This is not a surprise: the game is first-party, a sequel to an already-popular franchise, comes in multiple flavors with different breeds of dogs, and it has been heavily promoted by Nintendo. This continues Nintendo’s trend of first-party games finding success on its own hardware. According to Fox Business, the company has sold 3.61 million 3DS systems as of the end of March, short of the 4 million unit goal. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata described the sales as "weaker than expected." In other news, Iwata announced that there will be a port of the original Excitebike with 3D effects given to gamers when the 3DS eShop goes live at an indeterminate time in the future. This will be a limited-time offer, and there were no regions specified. Let’s hope this isn’t limited to Japan; after all, who doesn’t want to play a 3D Excitebike? Nintendo is…

I am a die hard Liverpool fan myself but I cannot seem to understand their lack of imagination in the EPL and their totally reverse playing style in the European circuit. I have now slackened quite a bit in watching these Reds play as I feel the English traditional style of playing soccer is lost to the more tactical and technical approach adopted by the Europeans. Look at Mourinho, Wenger and Benitez. The only one who can command a decent playing style in both the EPL and in the Campions League is Wenger. The game played by the Reds now is sadly boring and too defensive. Goal margins are low. The team I detest the most but who are playing like true “English Bulldogs” are the Red Devils. An all out attacking style of play. Now, that's entertainment!
